About Us

So like who is Genshiken?

Genshiken is a UCT Society that was formed to promote anime, gaming and Japanese culture to UCT students. It was founded in 2006 on the blood, sweat, tears and passion of dedicated anime and gaming lovers and opened its doors to members at O-Week 2007. The society is known for  anime screenings and various interactive activities at screenings such as ninja tag, quiz nights and Genshiken 30 seconds. When the society is not having a screening, they are hosting a gaming tournament. Tournaments are hosted with companies such as 2Up Gamers, Maingaming,CTS and Gameson.  The tournaments are made for all types of gamers, including all genres and gaming platforms.6-7 April 2013 the society hosted its first big gaming event in Jammie Hall,UCT. The event was done in collaboration with Maingaming and 2Up Gamers, the event brought about 200 gamers together in Fifa 13, Black Ops 2, Halo and Tekken Tag 2. We have since then had tournaments with CTS and 2Up Gamers on UCT campus.

So what is UCON and why should I attend?

The Genshiken society realized that Cape Town is deprived of awesome gaming and anime events and thus embarked to do the almost impossible and came up with UCON. Ucon is a university held convention that showcases anime and gaming related stores, competitions and events. It will be the first such event to be held in Cape Town and it aims to attract anime, gaming and technology enthusiast to take part in the making of a new tradition. There will be space available to companies who want to rent the plot to display and sell their merchandise or do demonstrations on their products. There will be a LAN for those who enjoy online games or classics such as Warcraft, we will also host a card based tournament for those who enjoy Magic and other card games, and 2 Up Gamers,CTS and Xtreme Gaming SA will be holding PS3 and Xbox games such as Tekken Tag 2, Forza, Fifa etc. Each tournament will have prizes for the winners that are sponsored by Gadget Time, Outter Limits,Readers Den, Cafe Viva and Nag Magazine. For those who love everything Japanese there will be Japanese orientated workshops happening throughout the day such as intro to Japanese language, How to draw Manga,Origami, how to make sushi and Japanese drums workshops as well as demos of Kenjutsu, Japanese drums and Aikido. For all our cosplay lovers there will be a maid and butler cafe as well as a cosplay fashion show held by BKE costumes. If you thinking about moving to Japan there will be a Japanese info desk as well as a Japanese culture exhibit. Lastly, there will also be anime screenings throughout the event, trade stations etc. hosted directly by Genshiken society members.
